This can be done in quartz composer. These promos are most commonly called buttons, bugs or lower thirds.

It is just a video sequence (with alpha). Quartz composer can play movie files and vdj (Video-SL, ME, etc) software can load the qtz. Now im not sure about vsl, but ME can use quartz in the deck (like a vid) or it can use it as an overlay (like a logo). Something like this would best be used as an overlay.

How do you render to a qtz file in after effects?

I rendered a mov w/alpha in after effects. I used an image loader in quartz composer to load the mov file.

I don't know anything about quartz composer I'm trying to learn I made a 3d spinning logo in after effects with an alpha channel, but I can't find any tutorials on turning the alpha .mov into a quartz composition in quartz composer. How do you render in quartz composer all i see is a export as quicktime movie and when I do that ME won't even let me drop it into the quartz slot. It would be cool if someone could make a tutorial on how to take a quicktime movie with an alpha channel and turn it into a quartz composition in quartz composer and also how to export in quartz composer
